The Minnesota Urban Pesticide Initiative Program
Jean Ciborowski
and
Collie Graddick
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has been working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in implementing an Urban Pesticide Education Initiative for two years. In this initiative, urban communities are educated about illegal pesticide use, pest management practices and, if needed, proper pesticide use. The program focuses on reducing pesticide use and exposure, especially around children. Community outreach is delivered through a short presentation, a demonstration and a free pest management kit to participants. Over 200 federal, state, local, community and environmental organizations have been involved, and over 300 presentations to over 3,000 people have been made.

Delivering IPM Information to the California Public Through Master Gardners, Retail Nursery Personnel and the Web
Mary Louise Flint
The University of California has developed a statewide program for helping UC Master Gardeners get IPM information out to the public. It includes an intensive IPM training course for Master Gardeners, development of presentation skills, close linkage with local public agencies and community groups in each county. Retail nursery personnel, who offer pest management advice to thousands of customers annually, have also been trained in the principles and practices of IPM.

The Grow Green Program
Robert (Skip) Richter
Grow Green is a landscape care and water quality education program for citizens of the Austin Texas area and retailer nursery employees. Grow Green was created as a partnership between the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department, Texas Cooperative Extension in Travis County, and local garden centers, and includes IPM classes, workshops and on-site trainings for garden centers and the gardening public. Educational materials include 20+ fact sheets, a plant selection booklet, training videos, fax alerts and a website (http://growgreen.org). Materials were designed to help customers and employees identify and solve common landscaping problems, and to offer less-toxic alternatives.
