Supporting the NCSU Libraries Special Collections:
Séguy’s Insectes and Papillons and More
The NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES' collections on insects and mites rank among the best entomological collections in the world. Holdings date from 1482 to present and include many richly illustrated books, scientific journals, manuscript collections, prints, and unique original illustrations of insects. The North Carolina Entomological Society, the NCSU Libraries' Special Collections Research Center, and the NCSU Department of Entomology are currently working with the Friends of the Library in an effort to develop further these outstanding entomological holdings.
Our prior fund-raising efforts helped the Libraries purchase two exceptional works by Eugène Alain Séguy, a French designer, who was inspired by exotic and colorful creatures of the natural world. Produced during the 1920's, Seguy's butterfly and insect prints are highly prized for their exquisite designs, rich colors, and exuberant celebration of nature's diversity.
In 1998-1999 we helped the Libraries purchase a beautiful copy of Séguy's Insectes, illustrating 80 insects from around the world. A similar effort in 2004 helped with the recent purchase of an original copy of Séguy's Papillons, a remarkable set of hand-painted collotypes featuring butterflies. Periodically, prints from these remarkable works will be placed on display in the Libraries as part of a larger exhibit.
Please help the NCSU Libraries acquire further exceptional entomological items for its SPECIAL COLLECTIONS IN ENTOMOLOGY by making a donation to the ENTOMOLOGICAL SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ENDOWMENT.
